Classic Mint Julep
This is the traditional drink served at the Kentucky Derby. If you want to join in the fun of the Derby, but cannot go to Churchill Downs—Here is an idea: Invite your friends to watch it on television and have your own Derby party.
It is tradition to serve this drink in silver cups, but you can use glass. Whichever you use, place them in the freezer to frost.
The Drink
2 ounces (¼ cup) good bourbon (my husband likes to use Jack Daniel's Whiskey)
1 tablespoon of mint syrup (recipe to follow) Mint sprigs to garnish and shaved or crushed ice
Mix the bourbon and syrup and serve in frosted cups or glasses over crushed ice. Add the mint sprig to garnish, a straw and you're ready to drink.
The Mint Syrup
1½ - 2 cups of chopped mint 2 cups of water 2 cups of sugar
In a saucepan (I like enamel for this) crush mint into sugar. Add water and bring to a boil. Stir until sugar is dissolved and remove from heat. Cover and let cool. Strain to remove the mint (discard). I then pour into a bottle with a cork and store in the refrigerator until needed.
This makes enough for 44 juleps (about 2¾ cups). If you do not plan to have a Derby party, the syrup keeps almost indefinitely in the refrigerator. Note: This syrup is also good in other mixed drinks, iced tea, lemonade and even hot chocolate.
P.S. If you do have a Derby party–don't forget the cheese straws!
